Alvin Hellerstein, the U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York, died at age 92 on Tuesday.

The court confirmed that Hellerstein died of natural causes shortly before his 93rd birthday. His death ends a judicial career that began in 1998 when President Bill Clinton appointed him to the federal bench. Prior to his tenure as a judge, Hellerstein served in the U.S. Army JAG Corps from 1957 to 1960 and completed 38 years in private practice. He earned both his bachelor’s degree and his law degree from Columbia University.

Hellerstein presided over high-profile litigation involving both former President Nicolás Maduro and President Donald Trump. He recently oversaw the federal case against Maduro, the former Venezuelan leader. The judge also managed Trump’s legal efforts to transfer his New York criminal case from state court to federal court.

A new judge will be randomly assigned to the Maduro matter following Hellerstein’s death. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, face a superseding indictment filed in early October. Prosecutors allege the couple conspired to commit torture against Americans and others to maintain political power. The indictment details a system of repression that included electric shock, asphyxiation, rape, and forced nudity. Prosecutors state that the defendants used psychological torture, including threats to harm the families of victims, to silence dissent and protect their authority.

The torture conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison if any alleged torture resulted in death. If no death resulted, the maximum sentence is 20 years. The pair also face numerous other charges stemming from their arrest in Venezuela in January during Operation Absolute Resolve. Maduro was originally charged in 2011 with narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy. Those charges were unsealed by the Trump Justice Department in 2020. Flores was charged in a January superseding indictment with cocaine importation conspiracy and weapons counts. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Earlier this month, Hellerstein denied Flores’s request for home confinement with GPS tracking during a bond hearing. Her lawyers cited a heart condition and argued she posed no danger to the community. A trial for the pair is currently scheduled for June 2027.
