Flavio Bolsonaro touched down in Miami on Wednesday morning, joining his wife and two daughters after a multi-leg journey out of Brazil. The group stepped off a Gulfstream G400 private jet at the Miami-Opa Locka airport. Their arrival marked the end of a rapid transit route that passed through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching Florida.
The move came days after Bolsonaro refused to accept the outcome of Sunday’s presidential election. He stated on Tuesday that he would contest the results rather than concede defeat. At the same time, he failed to comply with a directive from Brazil’s Supreme Court to hand over his passports. That order was tied to a money-laundering investigation in which Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.
The senator’s departure contradicted his public stance just one day earlier. On Monday, he posted on Instagram that he had no plans to leave the country. He claimed he would surrender his documents to fight what he called an attempt to intimidate him. The news of his flight only became clear late on Tuesday, prompting the US State Department to announce it would issue visas for him and his family.
Bolsonaro was able to travel because he holds Italian citizenship. This allowed him to move even though his Brazilian and diplomatic passports had been canceled. His legal protection from prosecution is scheduled to end in February, which coincides with the expiration of his current term in the Brazilian Senate.
His presence in Florida is likely to intensify diplomatic friction between the two nations. During the campaign, incumbent President Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of working with the Bolsonaro family. After the results were announced, Trump questioned the vote’s integrity, specifically criticizing the extension of voting hours as a poor look. He has also previously described Jair Bolsonaro, the senator’s father, as a victim of judicial persecution in Brazil.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently incarcerated in Brazil. He faces charges related to leading a conspiracy to remain in power after losing the 2022 presidential election. The arrival of his son in the US continues a pattern seen after previous Brazilian elections, where the former president also traveled to Florida following a disputed vote.
