Christine Lagarde will step down as president of the European Central Bank on 7 February 2027. The central bank confirmed the resignation on Thursday morning, ending months of speculation about the future of its leadership. Her departure is eight months earlier than the end of her current term, which was set to conclude in October 2027.

The governing council voted to approve the transition while meeting to set interest rates for the region. Members offered Lagarde a sustained ovation as a mark of respect for her service. In a video message posted to social media, Lagarde described her time at the ECB as a privilege and a source of pride. She stated that the bank is well-positioned to handle future challenges and that she feels she has completed important work.

The early departure forces a search for a new leader at a difficult time for the eurozone economy. Growth remains sluggish, and inflation is still above the bank's target. Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the role. Klaas Knot, the former president of the Dutch central bank, and Pablo Hernández de Cos, a Spanish banker, are among those mentioned. Joachim Nagel, president of the German central bank, and Nadia Calviño, who leads the European Investment Bank, are also considered likely contenders.

The European Council holds the power to appoint the next ECB president. Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg bank, suggested the timing is strategic. He noted that the European Union may be moving to secure a preferred candidate while Emmanuel Macron is still president of France. Macron is a political rival of Marine Le Pen, a right-wing politician who could win the French presidential election scheduled for April or May 2027.

Lagarde took office in late 2019. Her tenure included the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, economic fallout from the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and trade tensions involving the United States under Donald Trump. The ECB is expected to maintain its current interest rates during the meeting on Thursday afternoon.

In her farewell video, Lagarde appeared with two plasters on her face. She explained that she had undergone a minor surgical procedure earlier in the week. She used the moment to encourage the public to have their skin checked regularly.
