Hawaii County officials say recent samples are normal, but crews are testing further and providing a potable water tanker for residents.

Hawaii County officials reported discoloration in the tap water for the Kaieie and Papa’ikou area. The Department of Water Supply (DWS) is currently flushing the system and hauling water to the Kaieie tank to address the issue.
Recent water quality samples from the Papa’ikou system tested normal. DWS stated there is no reason to believe the water is contaminated. The agency will continue investigating the possible cause and perform additional testing.
DWS placed a potable water tanker at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Mill Road. The tanker is located across from the Kimura General store. Residents can use this source for drinking and cooking if their tap water remains cloudy.
Customers experiencing discolored water should run their cold water taps for five to ten minutes until the water clears. Officials advise starting at the lowest point in the home, such as a bathtub. Residents should avoid using hot water taps to keep sediment out of water heaters.
If the water does not clear, wait one to two hours and try again. Avoid washing light-colored clothes until the issue resolves to prevent staining. If the discoloration persists after flushing, customers should call the DWS Water Quality Assurance and Control Branch at (808) 961-8670 or the Hilo Operations Baseyard at (808) 961-8790. Crews can then flush the water mains in the affected area.
The DWS email address is dws@hawaiidws.org. For after-hours emergencies, residents should call (808) 961-8790.
