Twelve people were injured in a shooting outside Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, on Sunday.
The incident occurred after the Florida A&M University homecoming football game. Six of the injured victims are children. Eleven people sustained gunshot wounds. Three victims are in serious condition, and one person is in critical condition. Authorities are currently investigating the shooting.
The shooting disrupted a long-standing tradition at the historically Black university. Homecoming events typically bring together students, alumni, and families from multiple generations. The FAMU campus and the wider Tallahassee community are working to support the affected families. No arrests have been reported in the initial updates.
Former President Barack Obama campaigned in Ohio and Michigan on Monday as the midterm elections approach. In Cleveland, he criticized what he called “indecent and cruel” attacks on Ohio gubernatorial nominee Dr. Amy Acton. He then traveled to Detroit to support Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. In that city, Obama urged voters to reject attacks targeting a candidate’s faith and heritage. These campaigns focus on states where Black voters in Cleveland and Detroit may influence close races.
The Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide recall of more than 4 million tubes of toothpaste. The recall includes brands such as Brush Buddies and Aru toothpaste. The agency stated that using the affected products may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems. Consumers should stop using the recalled items and check the FDA’s recall notices for details on affected lots.
October 26 marks the birth anniversary of Mahalia Jackson, who was born in 1911. Known as the Queen of Gospel Music, Jackson was a close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During the 1963 March on Washington, Jackson called to King from behind the podium. She urged him to “tell them about the dream.” King set aside his prepared text and delivered the improvised words that became the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
The news cycle on Monday, October 26, also covered a tribute to Jackson’s legacy in gospel and civil rights history. Her influence on music and the fight for justice is still widely recognized. The FDA recall and the FAMU shooting stand out as major developments for consumers and the local community in Tallahassee.
