A community-owned grocery store and garden is under construction on Garner Road in Southeast Raleigh. The Fertile Ground Food Cooperative began excavation this week to build the new facility, which aims to expand local access to healthy food and provide a gathering space for residents.
The effort to create this store dates back to 2011. At that time, a group of neighbors organized to address limited options for fresh produce in their area. Architects and residents spent the following years refining plans for the building. Andre Johnson, the lead architect, designed the space to function as both a retail shop and a social center for the neighborhood.
Johnson described the project as a hub for local activity. He stated, “It’s almost like a center hub of activity.” He added that the store will serve as a model for future development, saying, “What this means is being able to demonstrate to the next generation what the possibilities are.”
Local students from kindergarten through twelfth grade contributed to the design process through a community challenge. Johnson noted that the students offered creative ideas for the space. The project holds personal significance for Johnson, who lived about one mile from the construction site while growing up. He now plans to show the finished building to his own children.
The cooperative remains active while construction proceeds. It hosts farmers markets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. The organization also continues to recruit new members to support the project. Residents can find details about market schedules and membership opportunities on the Fertile Ground Food Cooperative website.
The final building will include retail areas for groceries alongside garden spaces. The cooperative will use the facility to sell food and host community events. Construction is expected to continue through the coming months as the team works toward an opening date.
