Binance Investigates Security Breach as Stablecoin Issuers Freeze Billions
Tether and Circle halted transactions worth over $2.3 billion combined after the exchange founder called the event a likely hack.

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, announced on Thursday that it is investigating a potential security issue. Changpeng Zhao, the platform's founder, stated on social media that the incident appears to be a hack targeting the exchange. Although the company has not yet confirmed that funds were stolen, the rapid response from partners in the stablecoin market suggests the threat is serious.
Major stablecoin issuers moved quickly to secure assets related to the incident. Tether, led by CEO Paolo Ardoino, froze the equivalent of more than $1.5 billion in currency. Ardoin described the action on X as a response to a potential Binance exchange hack. Circle, co-founded by Jeremy Allaire, also froze funds. Allaire said the company halted transactions worth more than $800 million in coordination with law enforcement.
The total amount frozen by these two providers exceeds $2.3 billion. This freeze prevents the movement of digital dollars that may have been moved during the breach. The actions taken on Thursday evening indicate that the stablecoin networks are working to isolate the affected funds before they can be converted to other assets or withdrawn.
Bitcoin prices reacted to the news. The value of the leading cryptocurrency dropped 3.2% on Thursday evening, falling below the $79,000 mark. Market participants are monitoring the situation closely as they await official details from Binance regarding the extent of the damage.
Zhao, who founded Binance in 2017, stepped down as CEO in 2023 after pleading guilty to a felony related to money laundering prevention failures. He was sentenced to prison time for violating the Bank Secrecy Act, a first for that specific law. President Donald Trump pardoned Zhao in 2025, and he was released from prison last year. Zhao remains a shareholder in the company he built.
In a statement on X, Zhao assured users that their funds are safe. He added that as a shareholder, he expects all user funds to be fully covered. A Binance spokesperson echoed this sentiment in a written statement, saying user funds are completely safe. The company said its security teams are reviewing relevant information with urgency and will provide updates through official channels once information is verified.
Zhao has been a key supporter of several crypto enterprises associated with the Trump family. His history with the company includes a guilty plea in 2023 and a subsequent prison sentence for failing to monitor transactions and report suspicious activity. The current investigation adds a new chapter to the platform's regulatory and security record.
