Blackhawks road record stays 0-5 after 4-1 loss in Detroit
Chicago's ninth defeat left coach Jeff Blashill without his usual postgame optimism and Patrick Kane addressing a string of penalties.

Detroit beat Chicago 4-1 on Thursday, the Blackhawks' ninth loss of the season and their fifth straight road defeat. The Red Wings outshot Chicago 10-4 during Patrick Kane's five-on-five ice time and scored twice against him in that span. Kane's seventh minor penalty of the season led to Detroit's go-ahead power-play goal early in the third period.
Coach Jeff Blashill had offered measured assessments after earlier losses this season. That tone changed after Thursday's game. "Tonight, to me, wasn't that at all," Blashill said. "It's a step backwards. Because you just had too many guys that weren't skating, didn't compete hard enough or [didn't have] enough attention to detail."
The loss came two days after Chicago's performance against the Kings, which the team viewed as one of its best of the season. Forward Ian Cole said the locker room had planned to build on that showing. "All of us expected to use Tuesday's game to springboard us into a string of good play," Cole said. "It was pretty unfortunate we did what we did tonight."
Kane said "pretty much everything" went wrong during the game. He acknowledged his penalty total needs to drop. "[It] seems like a lot of them are [me] trying to lift a stick and either getting caught in the hands or high-sticking," Kane said. "I'll be better in that area."
Kane's son Trick attended the game at Little Caesar's Arena, where Kane received a return-to-Detroit welcome. Kane played for Detroit earlier in his career before returning to Chicago.
Chicago entered the game 0-4 on the road. The Blackhawks' record after Thursday's loss is 0-5 away from home, with nine losses through the team's first eight games of the season.
