Vincent Kompany left the hospital on Wednesday, ending a brief medical hiatus for the Bayern Munich head coach. Max Eberl, the club's board member for sport, confirmed the discharge during an interview with broadcaster ARD before the German Cup match against Magdeburg.
Kompany was rushed to a medical facility on Friday after collapsing during a second team training session. Eberl stated that the Belgian coach had been dealing with a virus in the days prior to the incident, which caused him to miss several training drills. The diagnosis was a meningeal irritation, according to Eberl.
"He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us," Eberl told ARD. He added that Kompany will now rest and take medication, expressing certainty that the coach will return to the touchline at full capacity soon. No specific date has been set for his return, and Eberl said Kompany would resume duties only after receiving medical clearance.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks managed the team in Kompany's absence. Danks was on the bench for the second consecutive match, having also overseen Sunday's 3-1 victory at Freiburg. Under his supervision, Bayern Munich defeated second-tier side Magdeburg 6-1 on Wednesday to advance to the next round of the German Cup.
The Bavarians rested Harry Kane for the fixture. The England captain became the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d'Or on Monday. He was also the first Bayern player to claim the award in 45 years and the first at a German club since 1996. Kane received a guard of honor before the match and waved to the crowd at the Allianz Arena while remaining on the bench for the entire game.
Michael Olise opened the scoring with two goals, flanking a strike from Ismael Saibari in the first half. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown added two more goals in three minutes during the second half. David Santos Daiber provided the final goal in stoppage time. Magdeburg briefly equalized and hit the post near the half-time mark, but the visitors could not maintain their pace against the league leaders.
Bayern Munich leads the Bundesliga title race and faces Borussia Dortmund in a match on Saturday. Both teams are currently level on points. Following the league clash, the club will travel to Spain to play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League next week.
