Novak Djokovic will not close the gap on Roger Federer's career title record at the Swiss Indoors. The 39-year-old Serb lost to Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday in Basel, ending his run in the tournament where Federer grew up and once worked as a ballboy.
Djokovic, the 36-time Grand Slam champion, dropped the first set 7-6 and the third set 7-6 after winning the second 5-7. Struff, ranked 47th, sealed the victory with his 27th ace of the match, a serve down the middle that Djokovic could not reach. The German had earlier saved the second match point with an ace of his own. Djokovic currently holds 102 career titles, one behind Federer's 103. Only Jimmy Connors, with 109, has more.
In a separate match that evening, top-seeded Ben Shelton suffered an upset to 222nd-ranked Jerome Kym. The 23-year-old Swiss wild card won 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 after a night session that saw Shelton salvage multiple precarious positions. Kym, who typically plays only in main draws in Switzerland, closed out the final tiebreaker with a backhand passing shot played at full stretch near the net.
This loss marks the third time this season that the No. 4-ranked American has lost to an opponent ranked in the triple digits. Shelton has also lost to seven opponents ranked between 56 and 87 this year, despite winning four titles on three different surfaces.
Djokovic's presence in Basel marked his first visit to the event in 15 years. He won the tournament there in 2009 by defeating Federer in the final. Federer won his 10th and final Basel title in 2010, a rematch that took place in his hometown.
In other quarterfinal action, second-seeded Arthur Fils advanced after dropping the first set in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory over Alex Michelsen. Fils will face sixth-seeded Taylor Fritz, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-3. Kym will play Jiri Lehecka, who beat Daniel Altmaier 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday.
