Iman Shumpert told a podcast audience on Monday that young men should learn to date before they become wealthy. The former NBA guard appeared on "SideHustlin' with Kristi K" to share advice on relationships and financial habits.
Shumpert argued that men who only begin dating after accumulating money often struggle to form genuine bonds. He said these individuals may rely on expensive gifts and their bank accounts to attract partners instead of developing natural confidence.
"Talk to girls before you get some money," Shumpert said during the interview. "And then you won't feel the pressure."
The advice draws from Shumpert's own background, which contrasts sharply with his professional career. He recalled a high school date at his family's home where a storm caused water to leak through the roof. Shumpert immediately grabbed a pot to catch the water, a routine task for his family but a surprise to his date. The evening ended when her mother arrived to pick her up.
Shumpert has also managed his finances carefully since entering the professional league. He arranged for his brother and a financial adviser to control half of each paycheck. By keeping a portion of his income out of his immediate reach, he made it harder to overspend.
His personal life has seen major shifts in recent years. Shumpert married singer Teyana Taylor in 2016, and the couple has two daughters. They separated in 2023 and finalized their divorce in July 2024.
The former athlete plans to continue sharing these lessons, emphasizing that relationship skills developed without the safety net of wealth lead to stronger connections for young athletes.
