More than 42 million Americans have cast ballots in the upcoming midterm elections, according to data from the University of Florida Election Lab. The lab reports that current turnout levels mirror those of the 2018 cycle, a period characterized by high Democratic engagement. Michael McDonald, a political scientist at the University of Florida, stated that the U.S. may reach record turnout levels, potentially surpassing the 2018 rate, which was the highest for midterms since 1914.

The data reveals a distinct partisan divide in early voting behavior. Democrats account for 44% of the early votes, while Republicans comprise approximately 31%. McDonald noted that registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters are currently more engaged than registered Republicans. He observed that this cycle has seen increased participation among young voters and minority groups. McDonald described the current electorate as potentially the most diverse in U.S. midterm history, citing high engagement levels among African American, Hispanic, and Asian American voters compared to white voters.

The early voting trends are not uniform across all states. McDonald explained that states without strong early voting cultures, such as Maine, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska, cast only about a third of their votes early. These states differ significantly from mail-in voting states or those with high volumes of in-person early voting. This uneven pattern limits the generalizability of the national early voting data. The Election Lab's model accounts for these structural differences, but state-level variations remain a factor in final projections.

McDonald indicated that Democrats are currently building a lead in early voting numbers. He projected that Republicans will close some of this gap on Election Day. The final results will not be announced until after polls close on Tuesday, November 3. The coming days will see continued voting across jurisdictions with different early voting windows, leading up to the final count on election day.
