The 12-foot, 90-pound animated skeleton known as Skelly has sold out for the 2026 Halloween season at Home Depot. The prop, priced at $299, features glowing LCD eyes and a new Bluetooth connection that allows owners to record sounds or speak into it live. This is the first year the skeleton includes the audio feature, which is designed to interact with neighbors on the block.

Skelly first appeared on shelves in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. It quickly became a popular purchase during a period marked by grief and uncertainty. Since then, the skeleton has become a common sight in lawns from California to New Jersey. Many owners keep the prop out year-round, dressing it in costumes for holidays such as Christmas and the Fourth of July, or simply leaving it in a bikini for the summer.

Home Depot has expanded the Skelly line in recent years. In 2024, the company added a chest lightning attachment to the model. For the current season, the retailer also offers a 6.5-foot version for customers with smaller yards, along with matching dog and cat skeleton props. The 12-foot version has sold out before Halloween in every year since its debut.

Aubrey Horowitz, the merchant of Decorative Holiday at Home Depot, described the skeleton as the ultimate American decoration. She noted that the prop fosters a sense of nostalgia and community connection. "Frankly, you know, a lot of times bigger is better," Horowitz said.

The skeleton's popularity reflects a trend in American holiday decorating that favors scale and whimsy. Immigrant observers have often noted the sheer size of American consumer goods and seasonal displays. The 12-foot skeleton stands as a specific example of this cultural preference for large, elaborate yard decorations.

Home Depot stocks the prop in time for the October holiday. The skeleton is available in stores and online until it sells out. The Bluetooth feature allows users to upload audio files or speak directly into the device, creating a personalized audio experience for passersby.
