Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta will stop publishing on November 9. The outlet announced the closure on Friday, marking the end of a publication that has operated for more than 30 years. Readers will no longer be able to access its digital servers, and the physical office will be vacated. The decision leaves the newsroom without a base of operations or a primary method for receiving donations from its audience.

The newspaper faces a difficult history within Russia. It has frequently challenged government positions and has survived six murders of its journalists, including investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya. Pressure on non-state media increased sharply after Russia launched a full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022. New censorship laws were introduced during that period. These rules mandate long prison sentences for those found to discredit the Russian army or spread what officials label as fake news.

The closure follows a period of legal and financial strain on the staff. State prosecutors have pursued several senior journalists in what the newspaper called a coordinated campaign. The organization lost its physical office and had its donations platform shut down. This removed the main channel through which it received financial support from readers.

In a statement released on Friday, the editorial team described the situation as a forced end to its work. They said the Russian authorities and security services compelled the team to cease operations. The statement noted that more than three decades of work with the country and its citizens would end. It described the staff as leaving without a means of existence and under constant threat of repression.

The newspaper stated that it continued as long as possible. It said it was evicted from its home and stripped of all resources. The statement emphasized that the lights would be turned off in the space where the team had lived for 30 years. It declared that the newspaper no longer exists.

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the specific announcement. The Kremlin has previously defended censorship measures as necessary. Officials describe Russia as engaged in an existential struggle with the West over Ukraine. They have also accused foreign intelligence services of trying to stir up discontent inside Russian society.

The closure is scheduled for November 9. By that date, the servers will be shut down and the team will leave the office. The newspaper has been part of the media landscape in Moscow for over three decades. Its shutdown signals a further reduction in independent voices reporting from within the country.
