Pat Murphy walked out of Tropicana Field on Wednesday night as the manager of the first World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers team in franchise history. The 67-year-old defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to secure the title. He leaves the ballpark not just as a victor, but as the leader who united a roster through a demanding postseason.

Murphy’s path to the championship trophy was not without serious health scares. Six years ago, he suffered a heart attack during a workout at American Family Field in Milwaukee. He was rushed from the ballpark in an ambulance. The driver asked for his next of kin, a question Murphy still finds amusing. He replied that he was not going anywhere. That event occurred in August 2020, during the pandemic-shortened season, and he missed much of that year as a bench coach.

His managerial rise began in earnest in November 2023. He was promoted to manager after Craig Counsell left to take the job with the Chicago Cubs. Murphy had served as the Brewers' bench coach since October 2015. He was hired by Counsell, who had played under Murphy at Notre Dame. In his new role, Murphy has maintained a stern approach to player development. He pulled outfielder Cooper Pratt and shortstop William Contreras from games this year for not running hard enough on the bases.

The manager is known for demanding accountability from everyone in the organization, including the front office. He instituted a system called The Check Game when he arrived in 2016. A white board tracks any display of ego. Players, staff members, and even owner Mark Attanasio receive a check. Attanasio received one for wearing a large Brewers logo on his private plane. Murphy noted that the system is meant to be done in good fun.

Murphy’s background in college baseball shaped his career trajectory. He won exactly 1,000 college games while coaching at Notre Dame and Arizona State. He earned the nickname Black Hat Pat for his intensity. In December 2010, the NCAA issued him a one-year penalty for a lack of oversight regarding rules. He resigned from Arizona State during that investigation. He managed the Netherlands in the 2000 Olympics and worked in the Padres organization before joining Milwaukee.

The manager is approaching his 68th birthday in November. He could become the first person to win a Manager of the Year award in three consecutive seasons. He has three children and one daughter, Keli, who is 40. His son Kai, 26, is a minor league outfielder for the Padres. He also has sons Austin, 11, and Jaxon, 7. He often brings his youngest children and their friends to postgame news conferences.

Murphy’s interactions with the media are rarely formal. He has discussed his Bruce Springsteen tattoos and the history of neckties during press events. He refused to shake hands with players during foul-line introductions, calling the tradition happy horse manure. When a reporter called him Mr. Murphy, he said it made him feel like he was substitute teaching in Catholic school. He overruled a communications official to FaceTime with sports media personality Chris Russo.

The Brewers now hold the title after a five-game series. Murphy will join his players for celebrations in St. Petersburg. He remains focused on the process rather than the outcome. He described himself as a check master who has never given himself a check mark. He views his career as an ongoing construction project that feels like it never gets done.

The next step for the team is a return to Milwaukee. The franchise will prepare for the offseason while honoring the championship. Murphy will continue his role as the central figure in the clubhouse. His method of leading through tough love and humor has defined his tenure with the club. The organization will announce future plans for the roster in the coming weeks.
