Sony Pictures released the official trailer for Prima Facie on Thursday, offering the first look at a legal drama centered on a defense attorney who becomes a victim of sexual assault. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Tessa Ensler, a British barrister known for defending men accused of such crimes. Ensler's professional confidence falters when she is assaulted by a colleague, Julian, played by Daniel Ings.
The narrative follows Ensler as she navigates the same legal system she previously used to protect clients. The story explores the gap between her professional experience and the reality faced by survivors. Suzie Miller, who wrote the film, expanded her original one-woman stage play for the screen. The theatrical version previously featured Jodie Comer in London and Broadway productions.
Miller and Erivo discussed the project's goal of sparking dialogue about consent and sexual violence. Erivo also serves as an executive producer. The cast includes Noma Dumezweni, Toheeb Jimoh, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, and Harry Treadaway. Susanna White directed the adaptation, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
The film is set to open in UK and Irish cinemas on Nov. 13. Erivo's portrayal of Ensler explores aspects of the character's identity beyond the courtroom. The trailer highlights the tension Ensler faces as she confronts the disparity between her reputation and her personal ordeal.
