Indianapolis horror host Sammy Terry visited the 93.1 WIBC studio this week to discuss the origins of his on-air persona. He joined hosts Brian Baker and Ethan Hatcher on the program Baker & Cruz. Terry arrived by crawling into the set, a reference to the character he has portrayed for decades.
Terry explained that the Sammy Terry character emerged from a programming decision made at WTTV Channel 4 in 1962. The station acquired a package of 13 classic Universal monster movies. The titles included Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Mummy. Larger Indianapolis stations declined the package. According to Terry, they believed no resident would allow horror films into their homes.
Channel 4 required a live spokesperson for the broadcasts because the station had not yet invested in recorded commercials. Broadcaster Bob Carter held the position. Carter also hosted a three-hour live talk show, covered championship wrestling with Dick the Bruiser, and delivered the weather forecast. Carter developed the Sammy Terry character specifically for the horror package. The role became a permanent fixture in Indianapolis television.
Mark Carter, Bob Carter's son, has performed the role since 2010. Brian Baker noted a personal link to the history, stating that his father operated the camera for the program at Channel 4 years ago.
Terry advised listeners to watch classic horror films for Halloween rather than modern slasher movies. He said the older films stir curiosity and imagination without relying on graphic content. He directed fans to his website, where he streams classic films similar to his television broadcasts. The selection includes The Mummy, the first film he aired, as well as Creature from the Black Lagoon and Black Sunday.
Terry stated that five generations of Hoosiers have grown up with the character providing Friday night entertainment. He noted that the tradition continues on his website. The full appearance is available on the 93.1 WIBC YouTube channel.
