Philadelphia forward Jaylen Brown was ruled out with left knee soreness on Thursday, adding to a growing list of injuries for the Sixers. The team enters its sixth game of the season with six players managing health issues, including starters and key rotation pieces.
The roster strain began before the regular season started. Dean Wade, signed to stabilize the second unit, sprained his ankle during training camp and missed the first three games. Jabari Walker suffered a knee injury in the third game and has been sidelined since. Anfernee Simons missed the entire training camp before returning for opening night.
Veterans LeBron James and Joel Embiid have each missed one game for load management. The team may rest them again on Friday against the Charlotte Hornets. VJ Edgecombe also sat out one game after taking a hit to the abdomen. Brown’s status fluctuated on Thursday, moving from questionable to doubtful and finally to out hours before tipoff against the New York Knicks.
Head coach Nick Nurse said the team does not have a fixed timeline for Brown’s return. He noted that treatment plans differ for each player, aiming to manage time and pain to speed up recovery. Nurse declined to directly compare Brown’s injury to Walker’s, stating that each case requires its own specific approach.
Brown was averaging 20.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game entering Thursday. He shot 44.2 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range. His absence leaves a hole in the offense, which has struggled to find consistency early in the season. Nurse expects the team to improve as players adjust to playing together and shooting percentages rise.
Embiid has made three of 17 three-point attempts so far. Nurse described most of those shots as open or nearly open, arguing that Embiid’s range forces opponents to adjust their defensive planning. The coach believes that if Embiid takes four or five three-pointers per game, his success rate will increase, creating driving lanes for other players.
The schedule remains difficult for a thinning roster. The Sixers faced the defending champion Knicks on Thursday, their second meeting with New York in the first six games. They play Charlotte on Friday, starting a back-to-back. Next week brings three consecutive road games in Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago.
The team’s depth is tested by these early setbacks. While the coaching staff remains optimistic about the roster’s long-term potential, the current injury wave limits their ability to execute their full game plan. Health remains the primary variable for a squad that was expected to be a contender based on its roster construction.
