Sarasota, Florida, consolidated its municipal parking enforcement under the local police department on Wednesday. The change places the city's Parking Services unit directly within the Sarasota Police Department's Patrol Division.

Chief Rex Troche cited employee safety and improved customer service as the primary drivers for the reorganization. The department stated that this structural shift aims to support staff during daily interactions with the public.

Under the new arrangement, employees of the former Parking Services unit will now hold the title of parking ambassadors. These staff members will receive additional training, communication resources, and field support from police units. The department has already begun providing de-escalation training to help these employees interact safely with drivers and residents.

Troche noted that this is not the first time the police department has managed parking operations. He stated that the unit has previously operated under police control four times. “This transition creates opportunities to strengthen training, improve coordination, and better support our employees as they serve residents, business owners and visitors throughout the city,” Troche said.

The operational roles will shift slightly. Parking ambassadors will continue to enforce regulations and assist with general parking concerns. Police officers will retain the specific authority to issue citations. Additionally, officers will be able to request assistance from parking staff when specific issues arise in the field.

The transition includes a gradual update to uniforms and equipment for the new ambassadors. The department plans to evaluate future equipment needs, which may include the deployment of body-worn cameras. Existing parking regulations and enforcement policies remain unchanged by this organizational move.

Administrative services for residents and visitors remain centralized. Payment and permit services are still available at the One Stop Shop located on the first floor of 1575 Second St. The department provided the existing phone number, 941-263-6475, and the email address, ParkingInfo@SarasotaFL.gov, as the primary contact points for questions and transactions.
